Practicing Self Care:
Do you love yourself?

In health care, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.   What exactly does that mean?  Simply, do you take time for you?  Every day are you engaging in something that makes you joyful, grateful, better?  It should not be exhausting or something you do not look forward to, but rather something meaningful.  If exercise is a form of self-care for you, there is no need to feel “spent” afterward.  But if going to the gym, focusing on your body and strength gives you a sense of accomplishment and contentedness, then by all means – yes!  Do it!

Can you think of 3 things that put a smile on your face and give you the sense of being alive?  For some, it is spending time with a grandchild – that most exhilarating feeling of loving, playing and gazing into that sweet little face-full-of-wonder staring back.  It could be that evening soak in the tub with a cup of tea or glass of wine that gets you back to center.  Long walks, lighting candles, cuddling a pet, treating yourself to some time alone to journal or even something as simple as a manicure or pedicure – anything that makes you feel like a new man or women – that’s self-care.

Other examples of self-care:

  • Not compromising sleep
  • Cooking for yourself (healthy!)
  • Daily skin care routine
  • Daily meditation & devotions
  • …I’ve always wanted to… ?  (fill in the blank!)

 

When you take care of yourself, you start feeling better.  When you feel better it spills into every aspect of your day – your life.  Remember, it is about renewing your mind, body, and spirit.  That connection and intentional behavior is key.  Good exercise, healthy diet and moments for daily reflection make us more intentional and aware of who we are as people.  Liking who we are becoming as individuals?  That is priceless.  Look in the mirror.  Do you love yourself?  You should, you can.  Take care.
